My brain must have gotten tired of warning me that both my feet are swollen and they are beginning to ache, for I could no longer feel the pain, only the numbness. I cannot concentrate on the fact that soon enough, I can fill a bucket with my sweat. I looked at my arms and I can see the insect bites starting to leave ugly marks; I can sense an itchy reaction coming up.

Still, I did not stop. I cannot bring myself to. 

I can only listen to what my heart was telling me; when to take some time and catch my breath, when to take one of my feet in front of the other and continue what I was there to do. 

Tales of 100 (ultra-trail run)

I told  myself that  I  would  never  do  another  100  km run but here  I am  doing  3.  If  only I  can  put  into words the ordeal,  the  happiness, the pain, the  triumphs and  the  failures  that  goes  with  it ,but I guess no words can really  explain  it. As  I  relive  the  experiences  of my  three  100  km  race…I look  back  at those  moments  that  made it truly  memorable and triumphant. So, this is just a summary of what I truly call,” trail love.”

“A  lot of  people  think  a race is  just  a  race  until they  find  out  about  the  sacrifices  that  comes  with  it.” 

Running through 100 km trail isn’t just about crossing the finish line and beating the cutoff period. It’s all about the days you’ve sacrificed for that day. Sacrifices  such as waking up as early as 2:00 in the morning , travelling in other provinces, planning your nutrition, spending your weekend in the mountain and getting sunburn and bruises in  the  long  run, buying gears , provisions and working-out  after office hours.  The  truth  is  sacrifices doesn’t always guarantee you a sweet success and sometimes it  even  turns  out to  be a failure. It’s a tough battle from the first kilometer until the very last. Things are quite unpredictable on the trail and anything can happen in the split of a second.

It was unplanned side trip after hiking Mt. Guiting-guiting in Sibuyan Island. We went to an Island and beach coves suggested by a local trike driver which is the most beautiful for him. Well, it was surprisingly beautiful and uncongested beach. 

Itinerary

Day 0 

From Batangas City pier, Take RORO (roll on roll off) ferries bound for Odiongan in Tablas Island.

If you didn’t catch the trip, take RORO bound for Romblon, Romblon then (at Romblon port) take RORO bound for San Agustin (Tablas Island) then Jeep or Bus that will pass by Calatrava. Calatarava is next town after SanAgustin. Fare is 50.00php

I was born a wanderer. Even before I started school, I loved to roam around town—as wide as a 3-block radius around our house. I was even tied upside-down on a guava tree by my mother when I missed lunch because I was busy wandering. Sometimes I am inclined to believe in my childhood superstition that the big mole on my left leg is responsible for my being a lagataw. But that’s just me—I can’t be confined nor contained in just one system. I was a freelancer for 10 years, teaching Koreans and Japanese the English language. And when I get employed, I most often work my way up to becoming a boss. I never joined a club or an organization in my university or in the local mountaineering and trail running communities. And this leads other people to think I don’t know how to follow rules or that I am an introvert. But I think I just happen to have my own set of rules and code of conduct.

Hello, I'm Jayrom they call me Jay for short and TravelPrince being my blogger name. I came from Ilocos and transferred to Manila when I started my college education.  I'm 31 now but I look very young at early twenties maybe? I've been to 23 provinces in PH so I still need to hurry up before it's too late. I love the Philippines and I would prefer visiting first the treasure and paradise of my country before heading to foreign land. My first international visit was in Hong Kong - ohh I love their transport system, it was designed and planned accordingly so that was phenomenal. Currently I'm the Strategic Business Unit Manager in Xerox Business Solutions for Finance and Accounting North America Operations and have been employed here for 8 years. I love my job, I love working with people and love working at night.  I love hiking but have fear of heights and love the beach but I'm not a good swimmer. Just recently I fell in love with landscape photography and I think I will die if I cannot go out to outdoors every weekend. I also started by blog last year and been very happy sharing my travel stories to people. Well, I'm looking forward that someday I will be known as a good travel blogger and hopefully earn from blogging and stop working in corporate world. I dreamt of having my own coffee shop themed with travel places in our region, showcasing the secret paradise of the Philippines that is still in the pipeline and once given the opportunity to attend trainings and workshop for pastry baking and coffee brewing I will definitely push for that business.

I am Elaine Ongpauco, I am born in 1980, and grew up in Marikina City. I competed in bowling for the National Team from 2001-2007 and won a silver medal during the 2005 SEA Games.

How long have you been hiking?

My first hike was February 2014 in Mt. Pulag. I was invited by a friend whom I just spent a vacation with a month before and did sky diving with on that same month, January 2014.

How many mountains have you conquered?

I conquered 11 mountains since February 2014. The most challenging has always been the first climb, Mt. Pulag. And that same the mountain has always taken the first spot in my list of favorites because of the wonder I never expected to experience in a climb.

I am Wendy Valdez-Garcia from PBB (Pinoy Big Brother) season 2. I’m 33 years old. I have been to Bangkok (Thailand), Bali (Indonesia), US, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, East Timor and many places in the Philippines.

Trivia: I laugh and cry when I sleep. My husband and very few friends know this. 

How long have you been hiking?

My first hike was in Mt. Pulag. I have been hiking for a year now and I have hiked probably 7-10 mountains. When I went to Prayer Mountain, all of a sudden I thought of wanting to do hiking before I would be married and have kids. When I went home that day, my friend RR (Enriquez) and Gail (Nicolas) were talking about Mt. Pulag. We went to buy stuff that we would need. We scheduled the climb and went as soon as we can. We were with other men (JJ, Dylan and Mark) that time. We saw rainbow and God was amazing every moment we were there. After that, we wanted more but the men did not want to go hiking again. Haha!

Nowadays, people have gone far giving their optimum strength and endurance beyond limits. People conquering several peaks in a day are not a question anymore.  Multi-day hike can trim down into hours depending on how prepared you are. 

Mariveles range offers several peaks like the famous Tarak Ridge and Pantingan peak. The Pantingan-Tarak traverse trail is well-known and respected by mountaineering community. Guaranteed long and strenuous hike awaits the visitors.  An ideal start-trek begins early in the morning from Bagac and will end up in Mariveles town. It passes through ridges, narrow and steep trail, great peaks, deepest forest and stunning view decks.

This is a very late post about my Southern Sagada adventures part of Banaue-Sagada backpacking. (This might be my reference if my notes get lost.) On my first day visit in Sagada town I visited the usual attractions around the town center. The second day I went to southern part of Sagada. All destinations were done on foot out and back. Both Mount Ampacao and Pongas falls were unguided except the cave connection.

From the town center, head to Ambasing Elementary School. At the fork road, take the right uphill road then follow the road (paved-rough) for about 45minutes to 1 hour until you reach the saddle or the ranch. Look for the trail leading to the summit where the network tower is located. Following the road after saddle might lead you to other village. Network tower is visible in the saddle area (common sense). For about 20-30 minutes you will reach the summit of Mt. Ampacao. Sagada town, Ilocos Region, nearby villages and mountains are best view and rewarding on top. And a-must-try traverse trail leads to Lake Danum.

It was a random and unplanned hike. I travelled by land and sea just to reach a place I’ve never been and just went to wherever my foot took me. Panay Island seized my soul.   Panay is one of the 6 major islands in Visayas. It is divided into 4 provinces: Aklan, Capiz, Iloilo and Antique.

While spending some time in Boracay Island on Christmas day, I was browsing in the internet where to hike in Panay. Not a major mountain but a nice hike without expecting too much. I brought my tent, stove, cookset and other equipment just in case, since I had no plans nor itinerary and I didn’t know where to go. I was thinking of a nice dayhike in Iloilo since I was just around the island. Then, I remembered that a year or 2 years ago, an invitational climb in Mt. Napulak was sent by some facebook friend from Visayas. The rock formation at the summit of Mount Napulak came into my mind but I don’t remember the name of it. So I decided to go for it.

The City of Baguio is probably one of the top most well-loved places in our country. Who wouldn’t right?! Seeing the Brazil like houses on top of the mountain once you enter the city, strolling along Session road and Camp John Hay in a cold weather, eating sweet & juicy strawberries and seeing those fresh vegetables in the market makes you wanna cook chopsuey, pinakbet or just toss some salads. And of course, there’s the growing gastronomic indulgence in the city and (Ooohh!) the smell and view of the pine trees while drinking hot cocoa or steaming coffee. Half my life, these are all I know of Benguet until the past couple of years.

Robert Frost once wrote on his renowned poem take the road less travelled. Well, it was the trail less taken for the outdoorsman-explorer Adonis Lloren of lagataw.com.  In a span of 90 days he ultimately explored and conquered all the towns in Benguet through the local trails. I can only imagine how exciting and fun that would have been?!  Spending his days trekking  & wandering on many picturesque trails, learning new cultures, rediscovering new routes and working & living with the locals.  

Slightly unselfish he shared one of the many trails he took by organizing a 3-day trek through the scenic and challenging trails of Bokod, Kabayan and Atok. The Ultimate Timbak was reborn. I took the chance of joining his extraordinaire and thrilling event. The instructions were very simple - pack light, be minimalist and fast hike.

We were eight trekkers in the group mostly ultra-marathon trail runners including Sir Adonis about to engaged in another unusual journey. The starting point took place at Jang-jang eatery along Ambuclao-Kayapa road in Bokod, Benguet and end point was at Km 55 along Halsema Highway. It was a total of 45 kilometers trekked. Mind blowing huh?!? What happened in between is what you are about to find out.

My dearest friend,

How have you been? I miss you, you know. I miss making your coffee and sitting with you and just talk and do nothing at all. I hope that you’re happy right now.

Remember that thing you told me before about me having layers? And that you hope someone would stop and stay and try to discover them just like what you did? Well, guess what, I have been climbing mountains lately.  I never knew something so physically draining could have an addicting effect on me. I know you won’t believe me when I say this but, I love every single second of every climb. But I guess you already know that because we both know you can read me that easily, so easy that sometimes, it’s scary. (I can see you smiling now.)

He left.

It’s funny how much time I wasted getting control of everything in my life, how sometimes I hold back words for fear of exposing myself too well.  And when you’re exposed, all those fault lines you were trying to hide will show and that only means trouble and pain. In a split second, everything changed, so fast, that I did not even have time to blink.

He left.

And just like that, my whole world turned upside down, inside out.

You can tell me right now that it’s not the end of the world and that there are a lot of fishes in the sea but, let me be the one to tell you this: there is so much more to say about the one who’s left behind, the one who will pick up the pieces while nursing a broken heart.

My first climb was in Mount Pulag.  I had no idea what I was getting into.  I was invited to join the adventure without having any prior climbing experience.  I relied on friends' comments on what to expect and suggestions on what gear and clothing to bring in addition to the list we were given.  

I remember feeling nauseated during the first hour of the climb.  I was so out of shape.  It was so cold and damp at night.  And the early climb to the peak was almost unbearable because of the temperature at five degrees Celsius.  I told myself never to believe a friend who says, "Don’t worry, you can handle it, it is not too difficult", ever again :).

The idea of climbing Mount Halcon in one day sounds crazy. One year ago, I told Sir Alvin Remo about my intension of completely hiking Mount Halcon in just one day. Sir Alvin, who I met and ran with in ultra-trail races, is an ultra-trail runner and an experienced mountaineer. I chose him as my buddy because I think he got the experience, guts, determination; and he will to do anything if worse comes to worst. True to my thoughts; he didn’t fail me and he agreed to come with me in my crazy plan. But our main problem was Mount Halcon remained closed since 2006. We didn’t push our plan until this year. 

Early this year, Baco tourism office released a new set of rules and regulation for climbing Mount Halcon. Mount Halcon is open for climbing from February 1 to May 31 of each year. The re-opening of Mount Halcon opened our most-awaited window. Finally, this was my chance to hike the elusive Sialdang, as other would call it. It was April when I called again Sir Alvin. This time we agreed to hike on May 31st so that we can still have at least a month of preparation. Iwas surprised when Sir Alvin, upon learning about the news, went directly to Baco (Oriental Mindoro) and arranged our climb (later on I learned why).

The line struck me and so I ask myself "Why do I really climb mountains?!"  Honestly, I don’t know how to start this article since I’m not really a writer but I guess the best way is to tell you my story.

Ever since I saw a friend’s pictures of Mt. Pulag sunrise with an amazing sea of clouds, i have always dreamt of climbing it. They called it the Playground of the Gods and one of the beautiful mountains in our country.
