Mt. Malasimbo, Mt.
Talipanan and Talipanan Falls
Talipanan Puerto
Galera
Oriental Mindoro
June 18-20 2011
We decided to traverse Mt. Malasimbo to Mt. Talipanan. Unfortunately, there was
no available itinerary for Mt. Malasimbo to Mt. Talipanan on the web. Some done
it by day hike for each mountain and the one I read tells that there is a
connecting trail between the two mountains through ridges. I assumed it was
possible based on my research. My estimated time of trekking was 10 hours which
is a traverse dayhike from Mt.Malasimbo through the “connecting trail” to Mt.
Talipanan.
Mt. Malasimbo Day Hike
Moving Time and Day(s): 4 Hours and 30 Minutes | 1 Day
June 18 2012 – Day 1
We arrived in Talipanan Beach then we headed to Mangyan Village
near in School. I negotiate with our guide and I asked him (Sir Manuel) if he
could lead us to Mt. Malasimbo traverse to Mt. Talipanan. We both get confused.
He told us that there is no connecting trail between Mt. Malasimbo and Mt.
Talipanan (Tower). The only possible way is to climb Mt. Malasimbo then head
back to Mangyan Village (jump off) and climb again to Mt. Talipanan. So, we
prepare for day hike to Mt. Malasimbo.
First part of the trail is steep. Slippery particularly when wet. After 20
minutes of assault, the trail is much easier, wider and gradual. Locals also
use the trail. Plum or “Duhat”-in tagalog are one of the fruit bearing trees in
Mt. Malasimbo. Beaches of Puerto Galera, islet and islands of Batangas, Malasimbo
Summit and Mt. Talipanan are all viewed throughout the trail. The big solo plum
tree serves as first campsite. Not far is the second campsite and water source.
Lunch is advice to take in the forested part near in last water source. From
there, prepare for steep and blood sucking limatik. Trail is dense with grass,
slippery in marble part and some are narrow. One hour from the last water
source is the last campsite or tambayan for locals. Views are more picturesque
and scenic. Summit is one hour away but be prepare for much infested with limatik,
steeper trail and view is not rewarded in summit. In our case, we didn’t push
through and it was my second time not to reach the top of Mt. Malasimbo.
Months of March,April and May, plum tree have fruits. We eat a lot
of it. After two hours of descent, we arrived in Mangyan Village. We wash and
clean ourselves in the river. We decided to climb Mt. Talipanan on the next
day. Our guide offered us to stay in their village for free. But we stay in
Mengie’s Beach Resort.

June 19 2011 - Day 2
I asked them who want to climb Mt. Talipanan. I convinced them to
climb but other doesn’t want to climb because they are tired and felt body
pain. We head to Mangyan Village and asked our former guide. He led us to
talipanan trail and told us the right way. We just followed the electric post.
I expect that there was a paved road (told by our former guide) but
nothing there. Sir Manuel also told us to turn left when the trail is letter
‘Y’ or fork. So, we followed his advice.
Before we turn left, I surveyed the trail. I think it was the right (or
correct) trail which Sir Manuel told us.
From the fork, trail was dense with grass and thorny plants. It
was too slippery and steep than we expected. We imagined how challenging the descent is. We
hope that there is another trail way down. Rains partially pour but no one of
us wanted to retreat or to surrender even we used our hands to climb. That was
one of slipperiest climbed I ever had and done. After two hours of trekking, we
reached the “taniman” or rice fields and we spotted the tower (Globe). Sir Maj
and I survey the area and look for trail going to tower. I and sir mark wondered
to the huge mountain not far from us but not Mt. Malasimbo, it was Mt. Halcon -
“As in WOW”.
The globe tower was abandoned and gate was closed. Around 1330H we
started our descent and followed the electric post. By 1500h we’re back in
Mangyan Village and went to Talipanan falls. After 1 hour of rest and
refreshment we head back in Mengie’s Resort. The next day we head back to
Manila.
