I love the mountain and hiking the
highest peak in Cebu is a must. If
you are coming from Cebu: Go to south bus terminal then take a bus that will
pass by Dalaguete.
**we
came from Barangay Tan-awan in Oslob
1300 Depart for Dalaguete Poblacion
(pronounce as Dalaget).
Take a bus bound to Cebu then
drop in Dalaguete (60php).
1345 ETA
Dalaguete. Lunch.
1420 Depart
for Mantalongon market
Ride
on habal-habal (motorcycle) (50php/ head).
1450 ETA
Mantalongon market.
The rain poured on our way to
Mantalongon and even getting worst on our arrival. An overnight camp in the
mountain was our original plan but we opted to stay in the lodging house (no name
actually) then hike on the next day. Hospitable people of Mantalongon helped us
to find a shelter. They offered the barangay hall for free and the other one is
lodging house near the old health center (approximately 200 meters away from
the market).

Mantalongon Market |
Mantalongon is considered as the
vegetable basket and summer capital of Cebu. The temperature was indeed cold.
0515 Just
turn left on the waiting shed (from the highway)
0533 Another
left turn on the fork (2nd waiting shed)
Paved
and rough road is the way going to the trail head.
It
was relatively easy and wide.
0550 Fork
road – turn right
0610 Trail
head. From the main road, it’s about a 20-30 minutes short hike to the summit. The
trail was relatively easy but slippery and some of the portion was rocky. Don’t
miss on the right trail going to the summit, the left one goes to other village.
0640 ETA
Osmeña peak /summit. A superb 360 degree view can be seen at the summit. There
are many peaks which are compared and akin to the famous chocolate hills of
Bohol. We were supposed to do a traverse to Kawasan waterfalls but we end up
only in barangay Sanlagan in Badian which is 1 hour away from the waterfalls.
0730 Descent | Head to the village seen at picture above.
Doing a traverse needs a guide especially for
the first timer (in Osmeña Peak) like us but we didn’t acquired though. One
must find the correct trail going to the village (shown in the picture). We
headed back where we turned right for the summit then took the left trail which
is parallel to the right trail going to the summit (just beneath the right
trail). There are locals you can ask for direction.
0755 ETA
Store | End of the paved road. Quick breakfast.
Just
ask for the direction heading to Kawasan waterfalls. The trail was established
and regularly used by the locals.
|
the village, end of the paved road and a store, not so far from the summit. |
0838 ETA
water source.
This
water source is commonly used by the local people. The trail was gradually descending and relatively
easy but be careful on the trail because some portions were loose soil,
sharp and slippery rocks, and deep valley. We kept on trekking on the well
established (obviously or commonly used) trail.
0855 We
commenced on a short steep ascent.
1015 After
the short hike (uphill). We found a small village on the other side.
0923 ETA
chapel beside of the basketball court. It was like a hidden village on the
valley.
0937 Entered
the dense forest and valley. A slightly steep and slippery trail commenced. It was rolling before the final very short
ascent.
1020 After
the ascent, coconut trees were in plain sight. From this point, downhill
descent starts.
1029 ETA
Junction, Continue descent. Some part was paved already and few houses will
pass by.
1040 ETA
Barangay Candi-is basketball court (Badian). It was a purely downhill road.

Candi-is, Badian, Cebu |
1120 ETA
Junction - Barangay Sanlagan barangay hall (Badian). The left road goes to
Kawasan waterfalls (+1 hour) while the other roadway goes to the national
highway in Barangay Malbago, Badian which is 2km. away from the Kawasan
waterfalls jump off.
We opted to ride on habal-habal going to the
Kawasan waterfalls jump off (25php).
1135 ETA
national highway – Malbago, Badian
1140 ETA
Kawasan waterfalls jump off
Next: Kawasan
waterfalls - Badian
