Daraitan Tanay, Rizal
February 24-25 2007
Last 2007, I’ve been in Daraitan
with UE Mountaineers. It’s about trekking alongside of the river, camping and
unusual backpack riding. Daraitan also offers activities like caving, mountain
biking and hiking. The river water is clean and clear that’s why it was awarded
as the cleanest inland body of water inRegion IV and a finalist for the national completion. It has also mountain’s
cool breeze during night and big boulders can pass through while doing the
river trekking/ crossing.
We didn’t visit the cave but what
we did was backpack riding. I think it was the last time and batch (UEM
Applicant) who did it. The major factor we should consider is the water current
and some part is too deep. Be vigilant and cautious at all time. Backpack
riding is not usually done or only be done by less mountaineer or individual.
Sacrificing backpack is a big question but if you want to experience it, so
have your backpack wet. Simple review about backpack riding:
What is Backpack riding?
Using of
inflated backpack as your vest/floater and you as the rider.
Preparation.
Use 40L and
above backpack. Remove all stuff inside your backpack. Inflate the trash liner
inside your backpack. Make sure the air can’t go out and it will not sink. Good
swimmer is recommended to do this but anyone can do it if the level of water is
low. Always consider the level and
current of the water.
Riding.
In Daraitan,
water is raging so be careful at all times. Put your backpack into the water.
Don’t worry because it will dry soon. Get also into the water. Make your
backpack as your floater (like kick board). Ride with the flow and enjoy.
